The director-general of the European Commission’s DG Connect joins the Atlantic Council to discuss the EU’s rapidly evolving approach to tech sovereignty and the transatlantic implications.

On Wednesday, June 24 at 5:00 p.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center and Atlantic Council Technology Programs will host a conversation with Roberto Viola, director-general of DG Connect at the European Commission, on the EU’s rapidly evolving approach to tech sovereignty and its implications for transatlantic cooperation.

The European Union has placed tech sovereignty at the center of its policy agenda, aiming to strengthen Europe’s capacity to innovate and compete in areas ranging from cloud infrastructure to artificial intelligence. The European Commission is advancing a suite of initiatives, including the emerging tech sovereignty package and the proposed Cloud and AI Development Act, designed to bolster Europe’s digital resilience while safeguarding its values. At the same time, these efforts raise important questions for the transatlantic relationship, including: Where do opportunities for cooperation lie? And where might divergences pose challenges?

To unpack these issues, Viola will offer his perspective on the EU’s strategic priorities, the rationale behind these latest policy initiatives, and the path forward for US-EU collaboration in shaping the global technology landscape.

New policy: In-person attendees will be required to show photo ID upon arrival, and no on-site registration will be permitted. Guests will not be admitted later than twenty minutes after the event’s start time.
