Jon Danilowicz is a nonresident senior fellow on South Asia at the Atlantic Council and a retired US Department of State senior foreign service officer with extensive diplomatic experience across South Asia. He currently serves as president of Right to Freedom, a Washington, DC–based nonprofit dedicated to advancing democracy and human rights.
During his State Department career, Danilowicz served multiple tours in Bangladesh and Pakistan, including as deputy chief of mission in Dhaka and consul general in Peshawar. He also served as deputy chief of mission in Juba, South Sudan, managed law enforcement and justice sector assistance programs in Pakistan and Panama, taught strategy and policy as a State Department faculty member at the US Naval War College, and served as diplomat in residence for New England at Tufts University’s Fletcher School.
Danilowicz writes regularly on South Asian affairs as a columnist for Counterpoint and The Daily Star. He is founding editor-at-large of South Asia Perspectives and co-hosts The J-Z Show, a biweekly podcast on Bangladesh with Counterpoint editor Zafar Sobhan. He serves on the board of governors and directors of the Marine Corps Association.
Danilowicz earned a bachelor’s degree in foreign service from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in national security studies from the US Naval War College.
