The Africa Center holds a conversation examining the security situation, political tensions, and humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and what it means for the wider Horn of Africa region.

On Friday, October 16 at 1:30 p.m. ET, the Africa Center will host a virtual event to examine the return of war in northern Ethiopia and its political and security implications for the country and the wider Horn of Africa.

Conflict has returned to Ethiopia’s Tigray and Afar regions, threatening the 2022 peace settlement that sought to end a conflict where estimates have put the death toll at 600,000. In September, seven regional armed opposition groups, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, announcing the “Alliance for Survival,” a coalition aimed at removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was just sworn in for a second term, from power in Ethiopia.

Government-aligned groups and federal troops have since made major gains, easily capturing Tigray’s capital, Mekelle. But the situation remains fluid, and the fighting is far from over. The conflict also threatens to worsen regional crises, intersecting with Sudan’s civil war and heightening tensions with Egypt. In this discussion, experts will examine what’s next for the conflict and the spillover effects for the region.
