WASHINGTON, DC – The Atlantic Council announced today the appointment of Max Brooks as a Nonresident Senior Fellow for the Art of Future Warfare Project, which is an initiative of the Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security. Brooks is the acclaimed author and screenwriter of works such as World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (2006) and The Harlem Hellfighters (2014). His affiliation with the Atlantic Council provides Brooks a new platform for his work exploring resilient security through strengthened national will, innovation, and infrastructure to address natural and man-made disasters.

“I’m honored to be invited to contribute to the Atlantic Council’s work,” Brooks said. “I look forward to engaging in meaningful dialogue about the issues that affect us all.”

Max Brooks is a New York Times bestselling author. His career as a writer has taken him from writing for NBC’s Saturday Night Live through work as a reporter for the BBC in Great Britain and as part of a documentary film crew in East Africa to the publication of his first novel, The Zombie Survival Guide. Brooks’s subsequent novel, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, was a New York Times best-seller that has been made into a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt.

With the Scowcroft Center, Brooks will advance the Art of Future Warfare Project’s development of new forms of thinking and planning for the future of warfare. The Project enlists artists—writers, illustrators, directors, videographers, and others—and employs creativity to engage the defense establishment’s effort to improve its planning and preparation for the future.

“We are very excited to welcome Max Brooks as an affiliate of the Scowcroft Center,” said Barry Pavel, Atlantic Council Vice President, Arnold Kanter Chair, and Director of the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security. “His work frames familiar problems of disaster preparedness, crisis management, and combat in compelling and instructive ways. Max’s creative skills are a natural fit with our Art of Future Warfare Project and we look forward to providing a prominent platform here in Washington for his extraordinary perspectives on the security challenges of the future.”

The Art of Future Warfare Project will host a public, on-the-record event in Washington, DC on Thursday, November 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Veterans and Post-Conflict Issues of the Future. Please RSVP to press@atlanticcouncil.org to reserve your spot or to schedule an interview with Max Brooks.
