Secretary Hagel is one of the most well-respected figures in US foreign policy. He is particularly well regarded for his achievements in modernizing America’s partnerships and alliances, rebalancing US presence in the Asia-Pacific, bolstering support for European allies, and enhancing defense cooperation in the Middle East. His compassionate leadership is manifest in the many important initiatives he led for service members and their families—from increasing resources for suicide prevention to accounting for missing personnel. His work launching the Defense Innovation Initiative, which seeks to better prepare the Pentagon for future threats, embodies the Atlantic Council’s commitment to strategic defense. His unparalleled experience across branches of government, in academia, and in the private sector inform his unique perspective on the foreign policy challenges America faces today.
