Journalists consider what Maduro’s capture may mean for the future of the free press in Venezuela.

On Tuesday, April 28, at 3:00 p.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht National Security Resilience Initiative in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center will host a “Reporters at risk” event on the dangers faced by journalists in Venezuela.

For decades, Venezuela’s authoritarian regime has devastated the free press by jailing correspondents and shuttering media outlets. It now ranks 160th in Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Index, with journalists risking retaliation for speaking against the dictatorship.

This event will feature journalists who have covered Venezuela discussing the threats posed to correspondents under President Nicolás Maduro’s rule and what the future of journalism looks like after his capture.

New policy: In-person attendees will be required to show photo ID upon arrival, and no on-site registration will be permitted. Guests will not be admitted later than twenty minutes after the event’s start time.
