Please join the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center and Rhodium Group on Tuesday, April 2, at 10:30 a.m. ET for the launch of a major new study titled: “Retaliation and resilience: China’s economic statecraft in a Taiwan Crisis.”

Over the past two years, Beijing has watched carefully as Western allies have deployed unprecedented economic statecraft against Russia. In June 2023, we analyzed possible G7 economic actions against China in the event of a Taiwan crisis and modeling their associated costs. However, our report largely left a critical question unanswered: how would China respond?

This new report examines China’s strategy to address US and broader G7 sanctions, focusing on its potential retaliatory measures and its means of sanctions circumvention. 

This event will introduce the key findings of the report and explain the thinking behind the economic costs associated with each scenario. Daniel Rosen, senior fellow with the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center and founding partner of Rhodium Group, will give opening remarks. Josh Lipsky, senior director of the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center, and Logan Wright, partner at Rhodium Group, will discuss the report’s findings and recommendations.

This will be followed by a high-level panel discussion featuring Peter Harrell, nonresident fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former senior director for International Economics at the US National Security Council; Abigaël Vasselier, director for policy and European affairs and head of China’s foreign relations program at MERICS; and Zongyuan Zoe Liu, Maurice R. Greenberg fellow for china studies at Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). David Shullman, senior director of the Atlantic Council Global China Hub, will give closing remarks.
