“Shape, Steer, and Sustain,” written by Robert D. Hormats and featuring a foreword by Atlantic Council Chairman Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., argues that the United States should pursue a global economic strategy based on six pillars. These include forge regional partnerships, establish bilateral economic partnerships with pivotal countries, advance “urban statecraft,” promote entrepreneurship and innovation statesmanship, leverage the US energy boom, and expand and secure the Internet. While coordination among a wide range of national governments is vital to execute this strategy, Hormats highlights the need for a more dynamic approach for nonstate actors to best promote transparency, free competition, accountability, and opportunity across the globe.
