As the global community continues to grapple with the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Atlantic Council is open for business. Our business, meetings, and events, however, are occurring virtually. For more information, please read an update from our President and CEO.

Event recap

A virtual discussion exploring the digital dollar as a potential tool in the economic growth and sustainability for a global society, hosted by both the Atlantic Council Global Business & Economics Program, and the GeoTech Center. View the solutions offered by Moderator Michael Greenwald, with panelists Lisa Pollina, Gabriel Abed, George Bachiashvili, Shane Glynn and Aditi Kumar. This 1-hour live discussion introduces why should we be undertaking these initiatives, and a new map tracker that the Atlantic Council is deploying based on the data of the demonstration of economic inflection points during an era of great power competition. Alongside our esteemed experts, and with the Harvard Kennedy School, we discuss how digital currencies are part of our international evolution.

The digital dollar is being debated in Washington and beyond as a potential tool in the economic battle against coronavirus. What exactly is a digital dollar? How would it work, how could it best be designed, and who would manage it? What are the benefits and drawbacks? And how does it compare with other countries, including China, are doing on Central Bank Digital Currencies? This event on May 19th from 2-3pm EDT was an Atlantic Council roundtable discussion with regulatory and technology experts on one of the major changes coming in the global economy.

This was the first of what will be several collaborations between the Global Business & Economics Program and GeoTech Center at the Atlantic Council. The event was livestreamed and questions were taken both from those who register to join the Zoom conversation and livestream attendees sending in their questions using Twitter via the hashtags #DigitalDollar and #GoodTechChoices.
