As the global community continues to grapple with the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Atlantic Council is open for business. Our business, meetings, and events, however, are occurring virtually. For more information, please read an update from our President and CEO.
Where does advocacy for LGBTI rights fit into the broader US strategy for global leadership in a new era of great power competition? How can the United States work with like-minded allies and partners to expand and strengthen global LGBTI rights as part of a broader effort to adapt, revitalize, and defend the rules-based international order? What do leading advocates for global LGBTI rights see as the key challenges and opportunities of the decade ahead, and how are they working today to prepare for them? Ultimately, how can individuals, organization, and governments coordinate their efforts to move global LGBTI rights forward in the 2020s?
This special pride month virtual public event on US engagement on global LGBTI issues features keynote remarks from US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun. Following Deputy Secretary Biegun’s remarks, a panel of leading experts share their insights and explore ongoing efforts to support and advocate for LGBTI rights around the world, featuring Urooj Arshad, Senior Program Manager of Dignity for All at Freedom House, Mark Bromley, Chair of the Council for Global Equality, The Hon. Robert Gilchrist, US Ambassador to Lithuania, and Damon Wilson, Executive Vice President of the Atlantic Council. Jeff Anderson, foreign service officer at the US Department of State and president of glifaa, will deliver closing remarks.
This event is hosted in partnership with glifaa, the organization for LGBT+ employees in the State Department and other foreign affairs agencies.
