Veterans, war, and the arts: A 2020 celebration of military service

VETERANS DAY 2020 joined the Atlantic Council’s creative energy with the nation’s celebration of veterans on this day of remembrance. Featuring welcome remarks by Adrienne Arsht and keynote remarks by General David Petraeus, this flagship event introduced a film adaptation of the stage play “War Words,” telling the stories of the veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

VETERANS DAY 2020 film featured in multiple outlets

The Atlantic Council's premiere of "Veterans Day 2020," written by Nonresident Senior Fellow Michelle Kholos Brooks and produced by Senior Fellow Steven Grundman, was featured in a variety of news outlets, theater sites, and veterans service organizations.
Michelle Kholos Brooks is a former public radio journalist and award-winning playwright with productions staged across the U.S. and Canada since 2004.
Brooks’ plays have been produced and/or developed at the Skylight Theatre, Centenary Stage, Pacific Resident Theatre, Bloomington Playwright’s Project, The Colony Theatre, Florida Repertory Theatre, Boston Court Theatre, The Road Theatre Company, Wordsmyth Theatre, The Barrow Group, Bay Street Theatre, Venue 9 Theatre, Wings Theatre, Laurel Grove Theatre Company, Drama West and Vox Humana Theatre Ensemble.
Brooks is the winner of the 2017 Susan Glaspell Award for her play Hitler’s Tasters and the Riva Shiner Comedy Award for Kalamazoo, co-written with Kelly Younger. Hostage was a finalist for the 2016/17 Woodward/Newman Drama Award, the Fratti Newman Political Play Contest and it was a 2017 Showcase finalist for the National New Play Network. Chair received second place in the 2015 Firehouse Theatre Festival of New American Plays.
Publications include Dramatists Play Service, Room literary magazine and The Daily Beast.
Brooks earned a B.A. from Emerson College and an M.F.A. in Fiction from Otis College of Art and Design. In addition to the Atlantic Council, she is a member of The Dramatists Guild of America, The Playwright’s Center and Pacific Resident Theatre.
