United States and Canada

The United States has enjoyed an unparalleled period of peace and prosperity since the end of the Second World War, due to its construction of a rules-based international order and maintenance of close alliances and partnerships. Canada has been a key partner for the United States, both due to their close economic links and their shared border, the world’s longest at 5,525 miles. Canada is also a key NATO ally for the United States and is active in international diplomacy around the world.

German Business Interests Speak Out During Russo-German Summit

By the Jamestown Foundation

From the Jamestown Foundation: [Former Chancellor Gerhard] Schroeder’s essay invokes U.S. President Barack Obama’s initiatives toward Russia to justify by analogy Germany’s own special relationship with Moscow (Schroeder’s close ally, incumbent Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier, also uses this argument). Claiming that the United States and Russia are now embarking on a bilateral ‘partnership […]

The Obama Debacle?

By Harlan Ullman

Despite overheated rhetoric from his defenders, history will not prove kind to George W. Bush and his foreign policy decisions that have been or will prove to be debacles. The Obama administration is quite right to argue repeatedly that the Bush team left behind a foreign policy mess exacerbated by economic and financial meltdowns.

NATOSource: Gorbachev Argues for Sharing Power with Moscow

By the New York Times

From the New York Times: In his keynote speech, he said the United States wanted to work with Russia bilaterally as well as together in third countries. That point was noted here, for there is a great deal of lingering mutual mistrust as to the two countries’ intentions, particularly in what is called “the post-Soviet […]

Remarks by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

By cfr.org

From cfr.org: We have started by reinvigorating our bedrock alliances, which did fray in recent years. In Europe, that means improved bilateral relationships, a more productive partnership with the European Union, and a revitalized NATO. I believe NATO is the greatest alliance in history. But it was built for the Cold War. The new NATO […]

There’s life in the alliance yet

By the Taipei Times

From the Taipei Times: It is a mistake, however, to believe that extended deterrence depends on parity in numbers of nuclear weapons. Rather, it depends on a combination of capability and credibility. During the Cold War, the US was able to defend Berlin because our promise to do so was made credible by the NATO […]

America and eastern Europe: Not captivating now

By the Economist

From the Economist: The region’s biggest fear is the health and credibility of NATO. The new members want the alliance to work on proper military planning, explicitly taking Russia into account as a potential threat as well as a partner. That has been taboo since the early 1990s and is opposed by some west European […]
