The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing another turning point in history. From President Joseph Kabila’s continued attempts to hold onto power long after the constitutionally-mandated end of his term in December 2016, to the repression of media and freedom of expression, to increasing grand corruption, growing conflict, and massive displacement of civilians, the country faces potential mass violence and the absence or collapse of the rule of law.
Please join the Atlantic Council, in partnership with the Enough Project, on Thursday, October 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for a discussion on United States policy toward the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the occasion of the launch of the latest Sentry investigative report on how inadequate anti-money laundering compliance and sanctions enforcement standards at banks can empower a wide range of criminal groups and corrupt actors, undermining governance and contributing to instability in Congo and beyond.
