From Allied Command Operations:  The Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James Stavridis, met in Athens with the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Ioannis Giagkos.

The two-day visit, on the invitation of the Greek CHOD, was mainly focused on issues of common interest in the context of NATO.

"I want to thank Greece for its contributions to NATO operations. You have been a devoted ally in Afghanistan and Kosovo. Your troops are doing fine work at the airfield in Kabul, as well as your engineers," said Admiral Stavridis. "You have been in Kosovo from the beginning, and I must compliment the Greek Navy for their valuable contributions."

During the meeting at the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, the two officials had the opportunity to exchange views on the major challenges faced by the Alliance in 2010, including NATO’s reform process, the new strategic concept and the evolution of ongoing operations.

Additionally, SACEUR met with Defence Minister Mr. Evangelos Venizelos to discuss Hellenic defence policy issues. Concluding the meeting, they both reaffirmed Greece’s already strong bonds with the Alliance, based on the shared common values and their strong commitment for a collective security throughout the Alliance.  (photo: ACO)
