Overview

The Atlantic Council LGBTI in Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program convenes and cultivates rising LGBTI professionals to be the next generation of foreign policy leaders. This first-of-its-kind program provides Fellows a leadership pipeline to become the next ambassadors, government officials, CEOs, NGO leaders and journalists in a foreign policy community that needs more diverse and talented voices. With the support and mentorship of the full community of LGBTI ambassadors and government officials who make up the Atlantic Council’s LGBTI Advisory Council, Fellows learn first-hand how to navigate their careers while also gaining expertise on issues facing the global community from experts and officials who are currently working to address the challenges facing the twenty-first century. The network, mentorship, and expertise gained from the program positions Fellows to have a greater impact on their current and future roles in foreign policy.

The program

The program, for mid-career LGBTI professionals, provides the tools necessary to become leaders in the foreign policy community, including expanded issue expertise to be better equipped to tackle the various issues facing the global community, a network of senior foreign policy allies supportive in their growth, and the mentorship and coaching from LGBTI officials who have successfully navigated the foreign policy community.

Fellows are directly connected with Atlantic Council board directors as well as ambassadors, members of Congress, NGO leaders, experts, and activists, through policy discussions and networking opportunities in a series of 7-10 off-the-record strategy sessions and master classes. Fellows also learn first-hand how to navigate their careers in government, policy, and business from senior leaders who have had successful careers while identifying as LGBTI.

The ten-month nonresidential and unpaid fellowship equip fellows with a deeper understanding of the critical issues facing the global community along with nonpartisan analysis on US policy and strategy. Sessions take place virtually and are open to professionals globally.
