From the AP: Russia’s defense minister says the military will deploy two army brigades to help protect the nation’s interests in the Arctic. . . .
[Anatoly] Serdyukov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying Friday the brigades could be based in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk or other areas.
From Thomas Grove, Reuters: Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia would boost its presence in the region to protect its interests.
"As for our own geo-political interests (in the Arctic) are concerned, we shall be protecting them firmly and consistently," Putin told a meeting of his ruling United Russia party on Thursday in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg. (photo: French Ministry of Defense)
