The Atlantic Council’s Future Europe Initiative held an invitation-only, single-table strategy session on NATO strategy and the Warsaw Summit with H.E. Edgars Rinkēvičs, Foreign Minister of Latvia, on Friday, February 26, 2016. As we approach the 2016 NATO Warsaw Summit, a robust Nordic-Baltic security strategy is key to transatlantic security in the face of the hybrid warfare tactics and disinformation campaigns that are disrupting the region. Recent increased American investment in the European Reassurance Initiative (ERI) is a first step in bolstering security on the Alliance’s northern and eastern flanks. Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs provided a frontline perspective on the implications of this commitment, how the Baltic countries are refocusing their own policies and resources to complement enhanced American attention in the region, and the deliverables Latvia would like to see out of the Warsaw Summit.
