Atlantic Council
Please join the Atlantic Council for a conference call with Mr. Markiyan Lubkivsky, Chief Advisor to the Head of Ukraine’s State Security Services (SBU), on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Mr. Lubkivsky, SBU’s second in command, will discuss the state of Ukraine’s national security as the country prepares for another military attack from separatist and Russian forces.
In recent weeks, security and military experts have warned that a new Russian incursion in Ukraine’s East is immanent. On May 9, Russia will celebrate Victory Day – an important national holiday marking the Soviets win over the Nazis in World War II – which could be an opportunity to ratchet up nationalist sentiment with another military move on Ukraine. Others believe Moscow will use the looming threat of a full-scale invasion to intimidate the European Union into lifting sanctions. What will Russia’s next move be? What can Ukraine and its allies do to prepare?
Mr. Lubkivsky previously served as a diplomat and Advisor to the President of Ukraine. He is one of the leading experts on Ukraine’s internal security and foreign policy. Ambassador John Herbst, Director of the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center, will moderate the discussion.
