In partnership with the Enough Project, please join the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center for a discussion on the ongoing political situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the wake of the December 31 deal between the country’s political opposition and President Joseph Kabila, who failed to respect the constitutionally-mandated end of his term in office on December 19.

Brokered by the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), the deal would have Kabila stepping down by the end of 2017. In the meantime, the political opposition would play a role in the transitional government, elections would be organized, and political prisoners would be freed. However, so far the implementation of the agreement has been hesitant, casting doubt on Kabila’s commitment to the process.

The discussion will provide an update on the unfolding situation in the country and how the US can best support the political transition.
