As one of Africa’s largest and most sophisticated economies, South Africa offers a myriad of opportunities for engagement with the United States on diplomatic, commercial, and security fronts.

A new Africa Center report by Anthony Carroll – Forging a New Era in US-South African Relations– assesses this relationship, which Carroll deems “underappreciated” by most in Washington. Distracted by displays of dysfunctionality and high-level corruption that have come to characterize South African politics, Carroll argues that the United States urgently needs to revitalize its relationship with one of Africa’s largest economies.
