The alarming rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) could have dire implications, not only for Iraq but for regional and global stakeholders. As Iraq confronts the increasing likelihood of a sectarian war, the conflict has recently taken on new dimensions. The government in the Kurdish north has announced a referendum to pursue independence and has deployed peshmerga forces to secure two large oil fields in Kirkuk and Bai Hassan. Farther north, Turkey is formulating its own policies to counter the burgeoning conflict and extremism on its borders.

To discuss reactions to the events in Iraq and address the implications of Iraq’s eroding security, impacts on Iraq’s energy sector and the Turkish economy, and potential strategies to curb the crisis, the Atlantic Council will host a members’ conference call with three featured speakers. Cengiz Çandar is a senior columnist of Radikal, a Turkish language daily newspaper based in Istanbul. He also serves as a columnist for Al-Monitor's Turkey Pulse. Dr. Fuad M. Hussein is the chief of staff of President Massoud Barzani of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq since 2005. Barry Pavel is vice president and director of the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security at the Atlantic Council, focusing on emerging security challenges, defense strategies and capabilities, and key European and global defense issues.
