As the 75th Anniversary of North Korea’s ruling party approaches on October 10th, amid signs that DPRK may be continuing strategic weapons development, speculation abounds on the potential for a provocative ‘October Surprise.’
Join us this Friday, October 2 at 1:30 PM (EDT), for a fireside conversation hosted by the Asia Security Initiative housed in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s to hear insightful, candid assessments on the situation from two former top leaders charged to deal with North Korea’s strategic weapons: General Vincent K. Brooks (US Army, Retired), the former Commander of UN Command, Combined Forces Command and US Forces Korea: and Mr. Markus Garlauskas, the former US National Intelligence Officer for North Korea and nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.
In 2017, at the unprecedented height of North Korea’s strategic weapons testing, General Brooks was responsible for maintaining the armistice and commanding the defense of South Korea, while Mr. Garlauskas led the US intelligence community’s strategic analysis to characterize the evolving threat from North Korea. Audience members will have the chance to hear them exchange perspectives on the progress North Korea has made in its strategic weapons programs, what more to expect in the weeks and months ahead, and the implications for the United States and its allies. After their one-on-one dialogue, audience questions on these issues will also be welcome.
