Spiraling US-China Trade Tensions: What are the Implications for Latin America and the World?

China and the United States have engaged in a fierce, but so far rhetorical, trade battle that could affect each countries’ economy and global trade growth. With United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin set to travel to Beijing this week, the stakes could hardly be higher.

If tensions continue to rise and bilateral tariffs are implemented, the implications will be felt among both China’s and the United States’ trade partners in Latin America and across the world.  In Latin America, China is the top trade partner for Brazil, Chile, and Peru, and the United States holds top position with Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela.

What is the most likely path forward for US-China commercial frictions?  How could a ratcheting up of tariffs impact Latin America’s largest economies? Which sectors will benefit and which will be harmed in the Americas and beyond?
