The United States has leveraged its financial and technological dominance to confront authoritarian regimes such as Russia, China, and Iran. Coercive measures including sanctions have become tools of first resort in addressing geopolitical crises. However, the use (and overuse) of these tools has ramifications for the global financial system and economy.

The Atlantic Council’s Economic Statecraft Initiative is pleased to host the launch of Edward Fishman’s book Chokepoints: American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare. This public event will take place in-person and virtually on Tuesday, March 18th, at 11:00 am ET.

In this new book, Fishman, a former State Department sanctions official, takes a deep dive into the past two decades of US foreign policy and provides an insider’s perspective on how economic warfare has reshaped global power dynamics. At this event, Fishman will engage in a fireside chat with Kim Donovan, director of the Atlantic Council’s Economic Statecraft Initiative, where they will discuss his book and his motivation for writing it. Following this, Fishman will be joined by a panel of economic statecraft experts, which are some of the key figures from the book itself. In a discussion moderated by Kim Donovan, they will share behind-the-scenes stories and examine the practical and strategic implications of economic warfare in today’s interconnected world.

After the event, Chokepoints will be available for purchase, and attendees will have the opportunity to get their copy personally signed by Fishman.
