Increased turbulence in the Gulf and the broader Middle East has given way to a flurry of international diplomatic activity in recent months. Iran and the P5+1 powers recently reached a tentative nuclear agreement over which Arab Gulf leaders have had serious concerns. President Barack Obama’s May 14 summit meeting is an historic opportunity for the United States and its Gulf partners to bridge differences and enhance political relations. More specifically, Obama can reassure his Gulf counterparts that a potential nuclear deal with Iran would not come at the expense of collective interests.

Given these important developments, the Atlantic Council will host a members call on Friday, May 15 from 9:00 to 10:00 am with remarks by The Hon. Dov Zakheim, Senior Fellow at CNA Corporation and former Undersecretary of Defense and Chief Financial Officer of the Department of Defense, and Mr. Mishaal Al Gergawi, Managing Director of Delma Institute in Abu Dhabi. The discussion will include reactions to the summit’s outcomes and address their implications for future US-Gulf security cooperation, its meaning in light of a potential Iran nuclear deal, and the balance of power in the Gulf.
