Ryo Hinata-Yamaguchi is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Indo-Pacific Security Initiative in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. He is also a project assistant professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo and an adjunct senior fellow at the Pacific Forum.

Hinata-Yamaguchi has presented, published, and consulted on a variety of topics relating to defense and security, and transport governance in the Indo-Pacific. Hinata-Yamaguchi previously served as a noncommissioned officer in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (reserve) and held positions at Pusan National University, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, FM Bird Entertainment Agency, the International Crisis Group’s Seoul office, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, the Embassy of Japan in Australia, and the Japan Foundation, Sydney.

He received his PhD from the University of New South Wales. He holds an MA in strategic and defense studies and a BA in security analysis from the Australian National University. He was also a Korea Foundation language training fellow. Hinata-Yamaguchi is a proud native and resident of Saku, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
