Pakistan races to avoid financial watchdog blacklist

The Pakistani Senate is racing to approve multiple bills to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing—and fulfill a twenty-seven-point plan from global watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF). With thirteen remaining conditions and an eye on the mid-October deadline, Pakistan is hoping to avoid a demotion from the FATF’s grey list to the blacklist, joining countries such as Iran and North Korea.

Event recap: Navigating Pakistan’s national security challenges

On August 10, 2020, the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center hosted the Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on National Security Division and Strategic Policy Planning Dr. Moeed Yusuf for a moderated Q&A on Pakistan’s national security challenges. Dr. Sahar Khan, an adjunct scholar at the CATO Institute, moderated the Q/A which featured several notable experts on South Asia including Safiya Ghori-Ahmad, Sajit Gandhi, Mark Brunner, Dr. Paul Staniland, and Dr. Chris Clary.

Indo-Pacific Pakistan

Safiya Ghori-Ahmad was a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center. She is also senior managing director and a member of the South Asia team at McLarty Associates and helps coordinate the firm’s business development and global client management efforts. Ghori-Ahmad previously served on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, covering South and Central Asia. She also served in the State Department as an advisor on Pakistan and Afghanistan in the Office of the Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP) under Secretaries Clinton and Kerry. She began her State Department career in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, where she managed portfolios in South Asia and traveled extensively throughout the region promoting good governance, transparency, and the rule of law.

Prior to joining McLarty Associates, Ghori-Ahmad led global business development at an international law firm in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, where her work took her to Southeast Asia and beyond.

Ghori-Ahmad is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She holds a JD and MA from the University of Arkansas and speaks fluent Hindi and Urdu and intermediate Arabic.
