Yesar Al-Maleki is a nonresident senior fellow with the Iraq Initiative at the Atlantic Council’s Middle East programs. He is also a Gulf analyst at the Middle East Economic Survey. Al-Maleki is an energy economist specializing in the intersection of energy, geopolitics, and economics in the Gulf region, with a focus on Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, and other OPEC members.

Al-Maleki previously served as managing director of the Iraq Energy Institute in Baghdad, where he led research on oil, gas, power, water, climate, and political economy issues in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He has also worked for the International Energy Agency and various international oil companies.

He holds a master’s degree in energy economics and management from IFP School in Paris and is a research fellow at the Institute of Regional and International Studies at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani. His analysis is regularly cited by major outlets including Reuters, AFP, and Al Jazeera. He frequently appears on Asharq Business with Bloomberg and other international broadcasters.
