IntelBrief: Another Crisis in Somalia?

In the latest in the series of “IntelBriefs” on African security issues being produced by the Atlantic Council’s Michael S. Ansari Africa Center in partnership with the Soufan Group, an international strategic consultancy, Africa Center Deputy Director Bronwyn Bruton discusses the recent ‘capture’ of US-designated terror suspect Hassan Dahir Aweys, and the challenge it poses towards future stability in Somalia.

Bruton argues that Somali patience with international intervention in their country–and particularly, with the presence of thousands of foreign troops on their soil– appears to be running thin. At best, this skirmish over Aweys will make the clock tick faster; at worst, the arrest of Aweys could spark intra-Hawiya clan violence or demonstrations against the government and African Union peacekeeping forces.
