IntelBrief: The Challenge of Feeding Africa

In the latest in the series of “IntelBriefs” on African security issues being produced by the Atlantic Council’s Michael S. Ansari Africa Center in partnership with the Soufan Group, an international strategic consultancy, Africa Center Assistant Director Adrienne Chuck argues that growing population, increasing urbanization, and climate change trends make food security prospects in Africa seem dire.

But Africa has the land and labor to become a food exporting giant, if governments permit private investment in the agriculture sector to supply valuable inputs, research, and infrastructure. Agriculture needs to become African countries’ most prioritized industry, and private investment in this sector should be welcomed into the continent.
