Brent Scowcroft Center US Navy Fellow Mark Seip writes for the Washington Post on why Chuck Hagel’s dismissal as defense secretary will “do little to change the direction of the fight against the Islamic State or broader national foreign policy:”

Dana Milbank’s Nov. 25 Washington Sketch column, “Obama has his Rummy moment,” asserted that the Obama administration’s decision to let Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel go was primarily based on Mr. Hagel’s inability to check the increased military action of the Islamic State. As a senior national security fellow, I would assert that Mr. Hagel’s dismissal was only a “must show some action” political move and will do little to change the direction of the fight against the Islamic State or broader national foreign policy.
