Overview

The Office of Finance and Operations (OFO) manages the operational functioning of the Atlantic Council and works across its 16 programs and centers. Operational efficiency within OFO is critical to the success of the Council and the Deputy Director, Office of Finance & Operations will lead the effort to continue to improve organizational efficiency. We seek a new team member to join us in our goal of delivering exceptional service to our colleagues to support the work they do to around the work with our partners and allies to shape the global future.


The Atlantic Council is seeking a highly organized, entrepreneurial, and motivated professional to ensure  the internal operations of the organization run at peak efficiency. The Deputy Director will partner with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee key operational areas, including finance, information technology (IT), physical and cyber security, facilities and building management, and legal and compliance functions. This role will work closely with the programs and centers across the Council to enhance and streamline daily processes.

A successful candidate will demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, strong teamwork and cross-organizational collaboration abilities, and effective communication. They should be comfortable working in a fluid, high-performing environment and have a proven track record of organization, dependability, and keen attention to detail.

This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters, requiring a minimum of 4 days per week in office. The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from 130,000 to $150,000. Applications submitted by June 27, 2025, will be prioritized for consideration.

Job responsibilities

  • Serve as project manager for COO priority initiatives by developing, implementing, and maintaining organization-wide systems, policies, and procedures. Collaborate across the Council to identify and address areas for improvement within the Office of Finance and Operations and the broader organization, working closely with the Executive Assistant to the COO, Chief of Staff, and Executive Office.
  • Maintain organizational business licenses, state charitable registrations, and other good-standing documentation.
  • Oversee all organizational insurance policies, working closely with brokers to ensure appropriate coverage for the organization, events, and travel.
  • Manage the operational, security, and IT budget within OFO, creating the budget, reforecasting throughout the year, and performing monthly reconciliations to ensure budget to actual spending is on track.
  • Supervise the Facility and Office Manager and the Receptionist.
  • Collaborate with Facility and Office Manager to oversee office space allocation and staff seating arrangements.
  • Manage the organizational travel program, including maintaining the agency partnership, ensuring compliance with travel policies, and guiding staff on procedures and risk management.
  • Function as an internal liaison to the Council’s outsourced IT managed services provider, including the full-time onsite systems administrator(s), the vCIO, and technicians. Assist COO with leadership of managed services provider to ensure upkeep of technological infrastructure, including organizational information systems, IT support, software applications, and other systems.
  • Partner with the Facility and Office Manager and building management to govern the maintenance and management of all facilities, access control, and security measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Management, Information Systems, Information Technology, Public Administration, or a related field required.
  • 4-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills and ability to write and edit under tight timelines.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills, including ability to identify, balance, and rapidly shift priorities as needed.
  • Positive, flexible, get-it-done attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and work proactively and independently in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills appropriate for operating effectively in a multicultural, international team environment.
  • Data-driven, detail-oriented, self-starter, and an excellent problem solver.
  • Experience working with a non-profit or international organization preferred.
