John Smith, partner and co-head of MoFo’s national security practice, moderates discussion on recent and future sanctions activity by the US

On November 7th, 2019 the Atlantic Council’s Global Business & Economics Program co-hosted a high-level roundtable conversation with Morrison & Foerster to discuss recent and future sanctions activity by the US legislative and executive branches. The roundtable featured speakers Ann Broeker, global head of sanctions at Moody’s, Andrew Keller chief minority counsel at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, John O’Hara chief counsel at the Senate Banking Committee, and Brad Smith, deputy director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the Treasury Department.

The conversation focused on the major US sanctions programs, such as Russia and Iran, and the expected next steps by Congress. The impact and possible expansion of sanctions on Venezuela were also discussed. OFAC director Brad Smith expanded on OFAC’s sanctions enforcement trends and future key priorities. Ambassador Daniel Fried, Atlantic Council’s Weiser Family distinguished fellow, and John Smith, partner and co-head of MoFo’s national security practice, moderated the discussion.
