WASHINGTON, DC – SEPTEMBER 7, 2022 – The Atlantic Council today announced that the Regional Clean Energy Outlook Conference will be held in-person in Istanbul on October 10-11, 2022, in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The conference brings together leaders from government, business, and research communities to discuss clean, secure, and sustainable energy development priorities for the region.

Russia’s war in Ukraine has exacerbated the ongoing energy crisis, which has reached unprecedented levels of volatility. This emergency demands both a focus on immediate energy security needs and emphasis on the broader goal of transitioning to a decarbonized and sustainable energy system. In the lead up to COP27, the time is right to accelerate the progress on decarbonization in the region, while exploring how clean energy solutions can contribute to addressing high prices and the supply crunch in the near term.

“The energy crisis and the impacts of climate change pose profound challenges for international alliances,” said Frederick Kempe, Atlantic Council president and CEO. “Working together with allies, however, can be a powerful mechanism for bolstering common cause on both energy security and sustainability.”

To address these challenges, the Atlantic Council is convening public and private sector leaders from Eurasia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East to share their expertise and drive strategic action at the Clean Energy Outlook Conference in Istanbul. This conference will be particularly timely as nations seek new solutions and partnerships for accelerating the energy transition while strengthening energy security ahead of COP27 in Egypt.

Nandita Parshad, Managing Director of Sustainable Infrastructure Group at EBRD, welcomed the efforts of regional cooperation on the future of energy, saying, “We are at an immensely critical juncture when it comes to the global energy transition. This conference will provide a valuable opportunity to discuss the current challenges of energy security and diversification while staying on track to net zero with key policy makers from the region.”

Topics to be covered at the two-day Clean Energy Outlook Conference, include:

  • Clean energy technologies and financing mechanisms
  • Hydrogen’s role in the clean energy transition
  • Circular economy and financing models
  • Financing the phase-out of coal
  • Special EBRD session: Regional clean energy outlook
  • Implications of geopolitical and energy market volatility on the clean energy transition
  • Startup innovation: Disruptive business models and the energy transition

The Clean Energy Outlook Conference is hosted by the Atlantic Council and EBRD, a leading financial investor of clean energy projects and climate change mitigation efforts throughout the region.
