Aerial bombardment of Aleppo by Russia and the Assad regime has reached new and catastrophic heights, as regime and opposition forces vie for control of the city. This civilian-centric destruction comes weeks after a US-Russia brokered cessation of hostilities that collapsed following an air strike on a UN humanitarian convoy killing at least 20 people.

Amid this violence, the Syria Civil Defense, more commonly known as “The White Helmets,” continues to embrace the motto: “To save one life is to save all of humanity.” Despite their life-saving mission, the White Helmets themselves are also under attack in Aleppo, with three of the city’s four Civil Defense centers reportedly bombed on Friday, taking two out of service.

Please join the Atlantic Council on September 27 at 11:15 a.m. for a discussion with the head of the White Helmets, Raed al-Saleh, on conditions in northern Syria and the work of the organization. The White Helmets have been nominated for the Nobel Peace prize, and their story is captured in a new Netflix documentary “The White Helmets.”
