Sudeep Kanungo is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s GeoTech Center and a former science & technology policy fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at the US Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy—Geothermal Technologies Office. With over a decade of international experience, Kanungo has led energy projects across North America, Europe, Africa, and South Asia.
Kanungo holds a PhD in geoscience and an MBA, enabling him to bridge technical, managerial, and policy aspects across both renewable and conventional energy sectors. During his fellowship with the Department of Energy, he focused on renewable energy policy and program implementation, leading initiatives such as developing geothermal power plant prototypes for US Department of Defense military bases. He also advanced energy transitions in Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, through the Department of Energy’s Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P-TECC). Kanungo was part of the US delegation that accompanied Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to launch the inaugural Geothermal Working Group at the P-TECC Ministerial in Bucharest, Romania, in July 2024.
Before his fellowship, Kanungo spent over a decade at the University of Utah’s Energy & Geoscience Institute as a research assistant professor, where he pioneered research in oil and gas drilling and established strategic partnerships with leading global energy firms. His expertise spans geoscience research, strategic alliances, and energy policy analysis. Kanungo holds an executive MBA from the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah and a BS and an MS in geology from the University of Delhi in India, where he was born and raised.
