On May 5, Panama—a global transit and commerce hub—will hold elections to determine its next president, members of the National Assembly, and local government officials. The election comes at a pivotal moment: from social protests last year to a drought affecting Panama Canal transit and a recent decision on investment-grade rating. In its first hundred days, the next government will face these inherited challenges— many of which carry repercussions far beyond its borders.
What should we be looking for as results come in for the May 5 vote? How should the president-elect begin to address constraints to Panama’s economic growth? What are the regional implications?
Ahead of this election, join the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center on Thursday, May 2, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. (EDT) / 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. (UTC−5), for a virtual conversation on the road ahead for Panama’s next government as voters prepare to head to the ballot box.
