As the global community continues to grapple with the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Atlantic Council is open for business. Our business, meetings, and events, however, are occurring virtually. For more information, please read an update from our President and CEO.

The Atlantic Council announced the establishment of the New American Engagement Initiative (NAEI), within the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, earlier this year to challenge prevailing assumptions governing US foreign policy, in particular with respect to the efficacy of military intervention and the lost potential for diplomacy.  The NAEI will fill a major gap in creative and innovative strategies in the current national discourse over the US global role. The long-term goal for this Initiative is to transform the national security debate within the international policy establishment and in the media.  Given the historic nature of these challenges and opportunities, the set of voices influencing real policy decisions is too limited. Unconventional thinking is urgently required to help Americans put the dangers into perspective and encourage them to embrace global engagement through diplomacy, trade, and mutually beneficial cultural exchange.

Please join us on Thursday, July 9, 2020, from 1:00 – 2:15 p.m., for NAEI’s  inaugural event, as we chart a course for the new initiative — and US engagement more broadly. The two NAEI Co-Directors, Mathew Burrows and Christopher Preble, will be joined by Susan Eisenhower, President of the Eisenhower Group, Inc and the moderator, the Financial Times’ Edward Luce, US National Editor and Columnist, to discuss which beliefs about US foreign policy need to be reexamined in light of the changing global landscape. The event will be introduced by Damon Wilson, the Atlantic Council’s Executive Vice President, and Gina Wood, Vice President, Foundational and Institutional Giving.

Please note: The event will be virtual, and participants will receive a link to participate in the event via Zoom upon submitting their RSVP.
