It is our pleasure to invite you to attend a virtual meeting, co-hosted by the Atlantic Council and Howard Baker Forum, on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time / Wednesday, November 24th, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time. The event will focus on Japan’s Sixth Basic Energy Plan and the role of nuclear energy in achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The audience will consist of American and Japanese government officials and energy industry stakeholders.

Ten years after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, many of Japan’s reactors remain offline. However, as Japan pursues an emissions reduction target of 46 percent by 2030 relative to 2013 levels, nuclear power’s ability to provide clean, reliable power has become increasingly appealing to policymakers. Japan’s Sixth Basic Energy Plan states that nuclear power will generate 20 to 22 percent of the country’s electricity by 2030, through an accelerated restart program for existing reactors.

The Howard Baker Forum, which sponsors the US-Japan Annual Washington Conference, provides a platform for examining specific, immediate, critical issues affecting the nation’s progress at home and its relations abroad. Established under the leadership of Senator Howard Baker, the Forum continues to organize a variety of programs and research projects to examine and illuminate public policy challenges facing the nation today.

The Atlantic Council promotes constructive leadership and engagement in international affairs by providing an essential forum for navigating the dramatic economic and political changes defining the twenty-first century.
