The Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, as part of its Counterterrorism Project, will host a hybrid all-day conference featuring a variety of current and former national security professionals who will address the current and emerging terrorism challenges facing the United States and its allies.

More than twenty-three years after 9/11, terrorist actors continue to proliferate and evolve, threatening the United States and its allies across the world. But Washington is prone to drastic swings in the threat of terrorism—exaggerating it immediately after a major attack while otherwise neglecting it. This conference will address those policy shortcomings by offering an in-depth look at the future of terrorism.

Join us on December 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET for a hybrid conference, with both in-person and virtual participation, at the Atlantic Council Headquarters, 1400 L St. NW, 11th floor, Washington, DC, 20005.

Counterterrorism Project articles

Following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, a widespread assumption emerged that international terrorist threats had been eliminated; but you cannot kill an ideology with bombs and bullets. It takes a sustained effort to address international terrorism and its root causes. The Counterterrorism Project (CTP) is committed to doing just that.

Explore the Initiative

The Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative (SMESI) provides policymakers fresh insights into core US national security interests by leveraging its expertise, networks, and on-the-ground programs to develop unique and holistic assessments on the future of the most pressing strategic, political, and security challenges and opportunities in the Middle East.
