Putin makes changes as Russia stagnates

With Putin’s presidential term set to end in 2024 and parliamentary elections to take place in late 2021, Medvedev’s resignation and Putin’s proposed changes come at a time when the Russian president is looking to secure a possibly uncertain political future.

Michael Newton was the assistant director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, where he assisted in leading the center’s digital, publication, and media work. Prior to joining the Council, Michael focused on Russian domestic and foreign policy at the Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe and authored the report 2018 World Cup: The Beautiful Game and an Ugly Regime, which focused on the corruption, discrimination, and forced labor prior to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Michael received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in international history.
