Steven Tiell is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s GeoTech Center. His work in data ethics and responsible artificial intelligence (AI) helps societies move toward trustworthy AI. Tiell has helped to build de facto public policy with the Monetary Authority of Singapore by authoring new regulatory guidance for fairness, ethics, accountability, and transparency while he was leading the responsible innovation and data ethics practice at Accenture, which he founded. Since embarking on data ethics work in 2013, Tiell has contributed more than a dozen papers that have moved the field forward. He has advised and consulted with dozens of organizations in advertising, defense, financial services, government, high-tech, media, public policy, public safety, and telecom industries. Tiell often speaks on topics such as governance, trust, data ethics, synthetic media, misinformation and disinformation, and industry trends.
Much of his career has focused on leveraging technologies for impact in the public sector. In addition to his fellowship at the Atlantic Council, Tiell is global head of AI governance advisory at SAS Institute. Prior to his work in data ethics, Tiell led global programs for Connected Urban Development and went on to lead the Smart+Connected Communities Institute at Cisco. He also led product research and development at Premier Retail Networks and started several entrepreneurial ventures. Earlier in his career, Tiell designed and built public safety systems at Northrop Grumman and helped to operate one of the nation’s first nonprofit internet service providers. Tiell lives with his family and two cats in San Francisco, where he plays and coaches underwater hockey. He holds a BS in computer science engineering, information systems, and an MBA in sustainable management.
