After the debacle of the Afghanistan withdrawal, which left allies in Berlin and London reeling over the lack of consultation, the Aukus spat with France has left a sense of distrust and disappointment in Europe. “Europeans must come out of their naivety,” said French president Emmanuel Macron this week as he announced a multibillion-euro defence deal with Greece aimed at boosting the continent’s “strategic autonomy.”
