On July 14, Army intelligence officer T.S. Allen and Scowcroft Center Senior Advisor Stephen Rodriguez wrote a Foreign Policy article titled “To Protect Democracy, Protect the Internet.” Allen and Rodriguez assert that the voluntary efforts of tech companies are not sufficient to prevent election interference. Instead, they argue that “The U.S. government needs to regulate social media platforms and make election interference illegal.”

As long as the world’s elections are increasingly mediated by U.S. social media companies, Washington must recognize that it has a unique responsibility to digitally protect them.
