On May 25th, the Atlantic Council’s Global Business and Economics Program together with the Millennium Leadership Program hosted a lunch discussion on blockchain technology and its impact on the banking sector with a delegation of high executives of Santander Bank.

The event featured Dr. Chris Brummer, director of Georgetown’s Institute of International Economic Law and a nonresident senior fellow with the Global Business & Economics Program; and Ms. Jai R. Massari, Partner at Financial Institutions Group. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Klara Jordan, Director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative at the Atlantic Council.

Ms. Massari presented and outline of the evolving development and applications of distributed ledger technology, which then pivoted to a lively discussion on bitcoin. A breadth of interesting questions was posed including what emerging blockchain technology means for the financial sector and how government agencies define and regulate cryptocurrencies moving forward.
