Over the last few decades, childhood mortality rates have declined, democratic governance has thrived, and technological innovations have become more widespread across the globe. To build on these accomplishments, foreign aid must stay ahead of the development curve by recognizing seismic shifts in such areas as demography, climate change, migration, and rapid urbanization. Development assistance must move from foresight to insight to action or slide towards irrelevance in the years ahead. This book charts a new way forward by showcasing over-the-horizon opportunities the development world must seize today to build a brighter future for tomorrow.

The Future Can’t Wait (PDF), ten essays from leading futures thinkers, was the outcome of USAID’s first-ever Symposium on Future Development Challenges held in November 2011 and cohosted by the US Department of State, the National Defense University, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Panelists will explore a number of global trends highlighted in the book and offer their own views on futures, foresight analysis, and next generation development challenges.
