On Tuesday, April 28, at 10:15 a.m. ET / 4:15 p.m. CET, the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center and Transatlantic Security Initiative will host a discussion with Theo Francken, minister of defense of the Kingdom of Belgium, on developments in the transatlantic security and defense relationship and Belgium’s role in Europe’s defense industrial ramp-up.

The future of transatlantic security is increasingly uncertain. Russia’s continued war against Ukraine, together with evolving concerns about the future of US leadership in Euro-Atlantic security and conflict in the Gulf, have prompted European allies to reassess their security posture. Like many European and NATO allies, the Belgian government has prioritized greater defense spending and developing its military capabilities.

Against this backdrop, Francken will visit the Atlantic Council to discuss Belgium’s priorities for transatlantic defense relations and how to strengthen Europe’s defense industry.

New policy: In-person attendees will be required to show photo ID upon arrival, and no on-site registration will be permitted. Guests will not be admitted later than twenty minutes after the event’s start time.
