Factbox: Attacks in Egypt Increase as Economic Conference Nears

As Egypt continues to prepare for an economic summit to be held in Sharm al-Sheikh later this month, attacks on police and army personnel are on the rise. In addition to targeting security forces, attackers have also begun to target businesses, among them telecommunications companies Vodafone, Etisalat, and Mobinil. At least one group has claimed responsibility for the attacks on the businesses, saying it is an attempt to sabotage Egypt’s upcoming conference.

Since the beginning of February, around seventy civilians have been injured, and almost twenty killed. Just over 100 security personnel have been injured, and eighteen killed. According to the armed forces, close to 250 militants have been killed.

Egypt’s newly appointed Interior Minister, Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar, announced a nationwide security plan, in anticipation of the summit, with the police and military working in coordination with one another. The latest security raids in Sinai have led to the killing of over seventy suspected militants over the course of the past week.

Despite the security measures, the attacks show little sign of slowing. The latest attack in Sinai left one civilian dead and over forty police officers injured after a water tanker loaded with explosives rammed into a police barracks in the city of al-Arish.
