Hawthorne on Democracy Promotion in Egypt

In an Atlantic Council issue brief titled, “Getting Democracy Promotion Right in Egypt,” senior fellow for the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East Amy Hawthorne argues that democracy-building should remain an integral part of the US-Egyptian relationship. Not only is there a moral argument for such a policy, but also the pursuit of a democratic foundation encourages long-term stability which serves the interests of both countries. Although US influence in Egypt remains severely limited, ignoring this essential basis for governance could severely hamstring security and economic priorities.
