Russian Army to Acquire Almost 300 New Tanks, Priority to the Caucasus Region

From Interfax: The Russian Army will be supplied with about 300 T-90 tanks this year, Army Commander Col. Gen. Alexander Postnikov said on Thursday.

"It is planned to buy 261 modern T-90 tanks," he said.

"We have switched from modernization to purchase of new hardware," he said.

There is twice more armor than necessary now, over 20,000 tanks of various modifications, and they will be replaced with new models, the general said.

Priority will be given to the North Caucasian military district, which will receive BUK-M3 systems, TOR systems of various modifications, as well as Smerch, Grad and Uragan volley fire systems by the end of 2010, he said. (photo:  AFP)
